Founded in 1988, China Rehabilitation Research Center (CRRC) is a large modern comprehensive rehabilitation institution integrating medical treatment, education research, engineering and information in our country. CRRC is directly under China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF) as a central financial allocation institution. It covers an area more than 220 Mu, with a total construction area of 120,000 square meters. Having more than 1600 employees and 1100 beds, CRRC mainly undertakes multi-field rehabilitation work in China, involving rehabilitation medical care, rehabilitation medicine research, rehabilitation personnel training, community-based rehabilitation instruction etc.
Over 30 years’ of exploration and development, CRRC developed many professional advantages: being established early with large business scale, a variety of rehabilitation approaches, full coverage of all rehabilitation procedures, advanced rehabilitation model, rich resources of rehabilitation experts and a wide connection with other important organizations at home and abroad. And the all-in-one service chain has been set up in CRRC penetrating disability prevention, treatment at acute stage, early intervention, rehabilitation at middle and late stage, community and family self-reliance. CRRC is a milestone in the history of modern medical rehabilitation and also a pearl studded to the rehabilitation cause in China.
Six organizations are under the umbrella of CRRC. They are Beijing Boai Hospital, School of Rehabilitation Medicine, Rehabilitation Basic Medicine Research Institute, Rehabilitation Engineering Research Institute, Rehabilitation Information Research Institute and CDPF Social Service Guidance Center.
As a Grade-A First-class general hospital characterized by rehabilitation in China, Beijing Boai Hospital (BBH) is a designated hospital for medical insurance and industrial injury insurance. There are outpatient and emergency service, as well as more than 52 departments in BBH comprising clinical rehabilitation, clinical medicine, rehabilitation therapy, medical technology etc. BBH offers 1100 beds and more than 600 sets of large-scale medical equipment with rehabilitation characteristics for comprehensive medical service, consisting of laparoscopic system, small arthroscopy system, orthopedics ultrasonic operating apparatus, intelligent multi-joint rehabilitation training instrument, the prosthetics & orthotics computer aided design and manufacturing system, rehabilitation robot etc.
BBH develops many dominant professions involving neurorehabilitation, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation, osteoarticular rehabilitation, nerourology rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation etc. Dominated by modern rehabilitation medicine, directed at dysfunctions and chronic diseases resulted from spinal cord injury, stroke, brain trauma, amputation, osteoarticular injury & disease, cerebral palsy, the general methods and rehabilitation team working mode have been adopted, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, recreation therapy, hydrotherapy, physical factor therapy, psychological therapy, musical therapy, social rehabilitation, prosthetics & orthotics, traditional Chinese medicine treatment, rehabilitation education, and vocational training, etc. The rehabilitation process based on function evaluation - rehabilitation treatment - effect evaluation was formed. BBH has also explored a set of rehabilitation model that integrates acute treatment with recovery rehabilitation, traditional Chinese medicine with western medicine as well as medical treatment with engineering. Adhering to the concept of "Patient first, Realistic and Enterprising, Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Contributing to Society ", BBH now is well received for the effect of its treatment given to patients from both China and over 20 countries and regions. In 2013, BBH became the standing committee member unit of Beijing Rehabilitation Quality Control Center and played a positive role in regulating Beijing medical quality management and promoting development of rehabilitation discipline construction.
BBH was also responsible for furnishing basic medical services to almost 1,000,000 residents in its vicinity. It took on many social duties such as fighting against SARS, medical security for large-scale sports events at home and abroad, targeted poverty alleviation, counterpart support and so on. Especially during earthquake relief respectively in Wenchuan, Yushu, Ludian, Ya’an, medical workers volunteered to go into the disaster areas and made outstanding contributions.
In 1991, CRRC in collaboration with Capital Medical University set up No. 7 Medical Department dedicated to rehabilitation medicine diploma education, which evolved to School of Rehabilitation Medicine in 2000, when the series of textbooks for undergraduate student of rehabilitation therapy have been complied, the first of such books in China. The diploma education has branched out to undergraduate, master, doctor Degree Program, and postdoctoral mobile station has been established. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, prosthetics & orthotics are certified by international organizations, and the corresponding courses are fully integrated with the international standard.
In 2014, CRRC became member in the first group of standardized training bases for resident physicians in the country, and also the standardized training base and the only assessment base for resident physicians in rehabilitation medicine in Beijing. In addition, hundreds of medical staff nationwide came here annually for further study, training classes, state-level further medical education program and international education program. The talents cultivated by CRRC have outnumbered 100,000.
Chinese Institute of Rehabilitation Science is composed of Rehabilitation Basic Medicine Research Institute, Rehabilitation Engineering Research Institute, Rehabilitation Information Research Institute and CDPF Social Service Guidance Center, which includes the following organizations: China Disability Prevention and Control Research Center, National Autism Rehabilitation Research Center, National Projects of Key Clinical Specialty Construction, National Drug Clinical Trial Base, Beijing Key Laboratory, Center of Neural Injury and Repair-Beijing Institute for Brain Disorders etc. Chinese Institute of Rehabilitation Science has successively undertaken many major scientific research projects such as projects of Ministry of Science and Technology, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission etc.
CRRC insists on the principle of combining basic research with clinical rehabilitation, attaching equal importance to innovation and transformation: and projects such as polymer materials and health products have been transformed into products. Many new prosthetics and auxiliary supplies have been developed by persisting in scientific research mode of integrating engineering with medicine and the clinical application. CRRC actively promotes the popularization and application of ICF in China. The core periodical "Chinese Rehabilitation Theory and Practice" has been edited and published and its index ranked 9th in the same kind of periodical.
Making full use of its technology and information resource, CRRC actively carries out publicity and education for new concept, new knowledge and new technology of rehabilitation. Meanwhile CRRC helps to regulate construction of provincial and municipal rehabilitation institutes, which accelerates the development of national community-based rehabilitation service network.
CRRC is positively engaged in multi-level and wide-ranging international exchanges. Personnel exchange and student study between CRRC and International University of Health and Welfare (Japan), Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Kennedy Krieger Institute (USA), Oslo Metropolitan University (Norway) etc. has been conducted. Partnership between CRRC and many countries and regions such as Japan, USA, Germany, Norway etc. has been set up, covering technical assistance, personnel exchanges, personnel training, academic exchanges and research cooperation carried out extensively. CRRC has hosted successively more than 40 international meetings, such as 42nd ISCoS Annual Scientific Meeting, Beijing International Forum on Rehabilitation, International Hearing and Speech Annual Meeting, International Conference on Autism Rehabilitation. Receiving friendly visits, by more than 1800 delegations totally 17,000 person-time including state leaders from more than 20 countries and regions, made CRRC increasingly influential in the world.
